Can I get off of pain killers myself, how long & how hard.

I want to know if I just tried to quit, cold turkey on my own, how long would it take and how hard would it be. My tolerence for pain is very low and I've tried before but I couldn't, I was too scared of some of the stories I've heard. and then again I've differently. I just want the truth. Please help me.
