severe loss of hip and back legs

By J. Merrell from Hobbs, NM on August 21, 2006 in Dog Diseases

My rat terrier (4 years old) extreemly active and barked at everyone and everything. She was under a storage shed where cats had been and taken a dead bird.

Two days later she begin vomiting. I gave her pepto bismoth and she was OK, next day she begin to droup and drop her back side. Walking slow and could not bark. Wanted to sleep or stay in bed all the time.
I took her to the vet. she was running 103.9 temp and they gave her 3 antibodic shots and did blood work that came back negative. She began to have clouded eyes, and yelped when picked up. the antibodics made her worse. After 4 days I stopped the antibodics and took her back to the vet. I was told to watch her and as long as she was eating and drinking she should be ok.
IT has been two weeks and she is not any better. I am giving her 40 ml of asprine daily with her food and she is some better while under the drug. When it wears off she can't control her back legs and lays and sleeps all the time.
Can you tell me if you have seen this condition before?
I am taking her back to the vet. He wants to do a spinal tap. (I just want some xrays to see if she has a bone damaged)
What do you advise?

Thanks.

J Merrell
