is celiac sprue and tropical sprue treated the same?

My husband has been diagnosed with celiac sprue by gastroscopy and blood tests. May question is, if he has tropical sprue and not celiac sprue, would it be treated differently? I was reading where tropical sprue is treated with antibiotics as well as gluten free diet. Is this correct? Is there a test specifically for tropical sprue? If he has tropical instead of celiac sprue and is treated for it, will be on a gluten free diet for life? I would appreciate your response to this. He lost 50 pounds and suffers from malaborption. His condition has improved with diet and supplements but we would like to know if it is tropical sprue, is there medication that would help. He was in the service in the tropics years ago and we went on a cruise which took us to Mexico. He became ill not long after our return. Thank you so much for your time. We can't seem to get a straight answer from the physician. |
