Can iron stores in a person's blood be built up gradually?

Can an individual build up an iron deficiency gradually? That is, by increasing the iron in their diets by small increments, can they eventually build the iron up to an acceptable level without having to take huhe quantities of iron and suffer unpleasant side effects, such as constipation? Thank-you!
