Wanting to be a RN

By Jennifer Rose from Clovis, Ca on April 17, 2006 in Nursing Schools

Hello, anyone who is reading this.....My name is Jennifer. I have been a LVN for over 15 years and I am wishing to move on from this position however I want to still work as an LVN while going to school. I thought I wanted to be a RN or "challenge" the boards however I didn't realize that you must take more classes than I have taken or prerequisites which my Redlands Adult School Accredited program back in 1991 I am sure the classes would still be okay to transfer over. I have a 14 yr old daughter and I lost my job I had for 3 years with a County I was making $26.88 an hoour with a Special Needs dept. Yes I was making a new grad RN pay because I was in a contracted limited position. There were other problems involved I don't want to go into detail but I had to get out before anything else would occur from this situation basically I was forced to resign from a GREAT paying job and I know LVN's in the real world don't make this pay so I am trying to cope with living within my means.
I thought I had the smarts about me thinking I could just take a simple brush up course for like a year while being on unemployment and go to school for RN and then I was hoping before this time I would eventually get employed but after "looking" online at these courses LVN/RN Fast track classes and some of them are accredited and some say they just send you tests to "prepare" you for the major test not like an actual school you would graduate from then what's the point of me wasting my money on that.
Plus, I am really not sure if I would pass all those chemistry, microbiology, math or English 9 classes in the first place I am 39 years old and I still have trouble passing medications never mind trying to figure out how to titrate them. It's a skill and I haven't passed meds since 1996 so I have been a little rusty.
Maybe I should just marry well and enjoy unemployment for awhile. Or start making some jelly preserves. At least I still have my humor alive.
