What is Mefenamic Acid for?

My friend gave me some Mefenamic Acid 500g tablets and said that they would help with my period cramp as I get it really bad.

Can you tell me what Mefenamic Acid does, how many I should take and how often. is this a pain killer or is it something I need to take prior to my period??
