The new kid on the block ... The Pink Kit Method for birthing better

Universal childbirth skills
By Wintergreen, trustee [website] from Nelson, New Zealand on February 22, 2006 in Childbirth

Giving birth to our children is the work of women yet every woman is different. How can there be a universal for all pregnant women to prepare for childbirth? How can there be a universal set of childbirth skills that can be used in all birth situations? That just seems too far fetched for most people. Think again ... this time think about all our similarities rather than our differences.

1) Childbirth at its simplest is an exercise in plumbing ... an object (our baby) must come out a container (our body) passing through a hole in a tube (our pelvis), open a diaphragm (our cervix) and open an aperture (our vagina).
2) Every woman breathes however, there are very specific breathing patterns unique to labour and delivery.
3)Every woman's body will be in some posture or another and either in a state of relaxation or tension during the process of labour and delivery.

BIRTH ROLE:

The role of the pregnant woman is to prepare her body for birth. Birth is the baby's effort to be born. Our job is to assist that effort. Preparing our body means we can maintain an open, relaxed body during contractions (which can be very painful) that are opening the diaphragm (our cervix). The other role of the woman in labour is to stay relaxed even when the efforts of her baby cause discomfort. With The Pink Kit Method for birthing better, all women can learn the positive birthing skills that come from thousands of women since the 1970s. Only the woman is doing the labour and delivery. With good birthing skills that come from self preparation, all childbirth can be a positive experience.

COACH ROLE:

The role of the husband or birth partner is to help the woman in labour to maintain her positive birthing patterns rather than become overwhelmed by the intensity of the efforts of the baby by becoming tense. Since all men and women share the same body, it's easy for men or other women to learn the same Pink Kit skills. Everyone has the same number of bones and they are in the same places. Everyone has the same number of muscles which we can all tense up or relax in the same manner. The role of the birth coach is to really know how to help the woman cope with, accept and work with the efforts of the baby to be born.

NEW CHILDBIRTH SKILLS EVOLVING SINCE 1970s:

Is something new or old if it evolved in the 1970s? The Pink Kit Method developed because so many of us felt the breathing and relaxation skills we were learning were not sufficient. With such diversity, our lives, our birth stories or situations pushed us into focusing on what we shared in common ... our birthing body.

We also learned that we had to multi-task in labour and delivery. In fact, childbirth was sort of like driving a car. When we drive, we multi-task all the time and we have to pay attention at each moment. Thankful, teaching yourself The Pink Kit Method in the privacy of your own home in the last 12 weeks of pregancy is easier than learning to drive a car because the skills make sense.

PINK KIT RESOURCES FOR THE MANY SKILLS:

1)The first cornerstone to The Pink Kit Method is learning the skills for our birthing body: learn to know your shape (map your pelvis), learn to create space (Hip Lift, Sacral Manoeuvre, Sit Bone Spread, Kate's Cat), learn to create internal relaxation (Pelvic Clock, Cervical Relaxation) and learn which positions keep you open so your baby can move through your container.

2) The second cornerstone is learning to prepare your aperture (vagina) so that you assist your baby's last efforts to be born. Preparing your aperture also helps to prevent or reduce trauma to your body or your baby.

3) The third cornerstone is learning the skills you need to cope with pain, work as a team, how not to go into labour tired if you have a niggling labour, how to use your Pink Kit skills in any birth situation.

4) The fourth cornerstone is learning the skills about Breath, Language and Touch ... three human behaviours which have very specific uses in labour and delivery.

Childbirth is a natural experience in a pregnant woman's life and deserves the best skills you and your birth partner can take with you into whatever birth situation you have. Every mother remembers the birth of her child. Childbirth is a BIG event in your baby's life make it as easy as possible for yourself and your child. Every other natural physiological human process is loaded with skills. We learn to cook when we're hungry. We learn to be a good lover rather than bonk. We learn to void in the appropriate place and learn to care for our monthly cycle.

Childbirth deserves our skills. The Pink Kit Method for birthing better resources are the skills that come from our experiences ... not designed by a professional nor delivered to you by a professional. Join the thousands of Pink Kit families who have used these skills to have a positive birth. (www.birthingbetter.com)
