Sensitive to Succinylcholine
By Sheila from Albert Lea, MN on February 07, 2006 in Succinylcholine
My son has had 3 surgeries (1 in 1999 & 2 within the last 3 months) Each time he has surgery, approximately 12 days later he gets really sick, shakey, disoriented, stomach upset, throat swells, loses weight (1st time 35lbs, 2nd time 27lbs) the first time he was sick for over 16 months, this time it's been 4 1/2 months and counting. The doctors say he must react weird to the anestethea. The only thing I know for sure is that his calcium and phosphorus is elevated, chloride is low, vitamin d is low osmolality is low, one doctor did the tilt table test and said that he has a postural orostatic tachycardia syndrom and to increase salt and water intake which we did and after 2 months no difference, he just had a MRI within 6 days and results were perfectly normal. He just had tubes put in his ears for fluid that won't go away and before the surgery they gave him Reglan in his IV and within a few minutes he began twitching and shaking and literally his arms and legs would shoot up in the air, he broke out in a rash on his chest and upper back. They gave him benydryl and after 10 mins or so he calmed down to where the twitching was just mild, they proceeded to take him into surgery and did general anestehia. He continued to twitch for about 3 hours after surgery. Then that evening he got extreme muscle pain and uncontrollable twitching ( similar to a person with Parkinson's Disease) this last 3 days, the doctor said it was a reation to succinylcholine. He now is back to feeling disoriented, abdominal pain, fatigue etc. Has anyone ever come across someone that gets sick like this after surgery? I am completely lost and I feel totally helpless and every doctor does a round of tests and say hopefully he'll get better and that's it. My son is 16 and otherwise normal boy and this is completely devastating to him and it is completely affecting his life in every aspect. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
