renal neoplasm

My elderly mother was just diagnosed with having a "renal neoplasm". We have an appointment with a urologist but are sitting on "pins and needles" until our appointment date.Could you tell me if this means that she has kidney cancer? Could it simply be a non-malignant tumer? The definition of "neoplasm" is confusing me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Christie Crowell
