Black line in Iris

I occasionally get a thick black line in the iris of my eye (Left) which runs from the middle of the pupil down to the bottom of my iris. This line appears sometimes and then will disappear, I have not been able to associate any specific reason why this could happen? Is this common with people? Does it mean a problem with my health? Could it be affected by emotion? Please help if you can.
