Why do her kittens die?

By Pamela from Camano Island, Washington on August 26, 2005 in Cats

I recently got to know my neighbor, they had some kittens for adoption. I wasn't sure which kitten I would pick. When I first saw the kittens they didn't even have their eyes open, the momma cat seemed to be healthy but at about 3 - 4 weeks old the kittens got quite lethargic and in the space of time of less than 48 hours one by one they (the kittens) died. At one point it seemed as though the kittens had contracted some form of lock jaw, very shortly soon after that they would breath heavily, let out a very loud kitten type meow scream and then they would pass away. It is confusing, after all the previous litter survived, the one before that the kittens got sick and died in the same manner. Whats wrong? What could they possibly have? Does the momma cat have a diease that she is passing down to her babies without getting sick herself? Please, what is the matter? It was so sad to be a witness to this. I hope that you can help.
Thank-You.
Sincerely,
Pamela R. Ruiz
