lump on dog's throat

We have a toller and just found a lump on her throat that is about the size of a quarter. We have an appointment for her to be checked , but I was wondering what the possible cause is. I should mention that it has had no effect on her normal activites or functions. She eats , plays , and follows the rest of her routine and she gives no indication of being in pain , even when I touched the lump.
