Spina bifida in dogs

Please can you tell me the causes of spina bifida ie is it hereditary? I am interested because one puppy out of a litter of 3 had it and we need to know if the parents are carriers but there is very little info about causes on the net and certainly nothing about SB in dogs. Any help appreciated
